This short, extremely technical and rocky ride offers beautiful views of Pusch Ridge Wilderness.
Ride Options
Two-Vehicle, One-Way Ride: Starting from Sunset Trailhead, a one-way ride to Marshall Gulch (0.9 miles) will be net downhill. On the weekend, parking at either trailhead may be difficult to find.
One-Vehicle, Out-and-Back: If you only have one car, you will either need to complete an out-and-back on Sunset Trail (1.8 miles) or bike Catalina Highway to return to your vehicle at Sunset Trailhead (4.3 miles).
Driving Directions to Sunset Trailhead (Start)
From Palisades Visitor Center continue up Catalina Highway for 3.2 miles to the turn off for Sykes Knob Road. The parking lot for Sunset Trail is immediately to the left.
Driving Directions to Marshall Gulch Trailhead (end)
From Palisades Visitor Center continue up Catalina Highway for 6.4 miles. You’ll pass through the town of Summerhaven and continue until you reach the end of the road. There will be a small parking area with restrooms, and additional parking and picnic tables in the area. Sunset Trail #90 begins at the south end of the parking lot. There is no trailhead sign.
Ride Description
From the Sunset Trail parking lot find the trailhead sign. At the sign, you will see a gate to your left, Soldiers Camp Road directly in front of you, and Sykes Knob Road continuing uphill to the right. Take Soldiers Camp Road. Continue to bare left at the next intersection as you ride past several cabins. After .2 miles, the road will turn left, and a trail will begin on the right. You will see a metal sign for Sunset Trail #90 here.
This trail contours around a southern exposure of Mount Lemmon, providing views of Pusch Ridge Wilderness and the boulder-filled Marshall Gulch. The trail is rocky and exposed. Once you reach Marshall Gulch Trailhead there will be a bathroom and picnic area.
Safety
This trail is EXTREMELY TECHNICAL. There are some hike-a-bike sections, as well as areas with steep drop-offs. Please take care as you traverse. This trail is also open to hikers. Please be mindful of other users as you enjoy your trek.
If you only have one vehicle or plan to bike Catalina Highway for multiple runs, please use caution. This road has narrow berms and blind turns.
The mileage and elevation profile for this ride is one-way. Please make arrangements to get back to your vehicle, or be prepared for the climb back to your car.
